Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)
Cardiomyopathy is occurring because of the abnormal heart muscle. Cardiomyopathy is classified into three main types: restrictive cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic myopathy. Cardiomyopathy, makes heart challenging to pump and deliver blood to the rest of your body. With times, it leads to cardiac arrest.
Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) is a disease in that the muscles of the heart becomes thickened. When the muscular septum of the heart becomes too think, it starts to obstruct the pump out blood from the heart to rest of the body, and eventually might cause the mitral valve leaky (regurgitation).
Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy is a genetic disease that generally runs in families, but can also occur spontaneously in people without a family history. Symptoms include shortness of breath, light-headedness, chest pain, palpitations, and fatigue. It is a common cause of sudden unexplained death, especially in young people.
Although the causes of cardiomyopathy are not known, there are some factors that could contribute to it:
- Problems in the valves of the heart
- Obesity or thyroid malfunctioning or diabetes
- Genetic conditions
- High blood pressure for long durations
- Excessive consumption of alcohol, cocaine or steroids
- Complicated pregnancy
- Disorders in connective tissues
- Chemotherapy and cancer medication
- Hemochromatosis – Iron buildup in muscles of the heart
- Sarcoidosis – Inflammation and growth of cell lumps in the heart
- Amyloidosis - A disorder that causes the accumulation of abnormal proteins
Alcohol Septal Ablation for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy of H
This procedure is also known as Ethanol ablation. In this procedure, a small part of the thickened heart muscle is tear downed by injecting ethanol through a catheter into the artery supplying blood to that area.
Alcohol septal ablation known as a minimally invasive procedure performed to treat the severe symptoms of HOCM, which cannot be relieved with medicines. The ablated tissue dies and is replaced by thinner scar tissue, restoring blood flow out of the heart.
Possible complications with this procedure include heart block (which requires implantation of a cardioverter-defibrillator).
