Vaginal rejuvenation (Vaginoplasty)
The term "vaginal rejuvenation" covers several different procedures. It is sometimes called female genital plastic surgery, female genital rejuvenation surgery, female genital cosmetic surgery, vulvovaginal plastic surgery and designer vagina surgery.
Vaginoplasty is a reconstructive surgery performed for two main reasons:
- Reconstruction of Neo-Vagina in people with a congenital deformity- the absence of vagina or sex reassignment surgery for ambiguous genitalia.
- Reconstruction of ageing and patulous vagina in patients with multiple pregnancies, episiotomy defects. It is also called as vaginal tightening surgery.
An alternative is noninvasive vaginal tightening through heating tissues with radiofrequency waves or laser. Patients with significant laxity may not experience a benefit from these treatments and may be better candidates for surgical tightening with vaginoplasty.
Patients may have one to two weeks of downtime. They may feel a deep ache for the first few days, and there is no tampon use or intercourse for four to eight weeks. Depending on the amount of tightening performed, some patients may be instructed to use dilators.
