Mitral balloon valvuloplasty is a procedure to repair a heart valve that has a narrowed opening. This is a catheter-based procedure that allows a balloon to open of a narrowed (stenotic) mitral valve.
Mitral valvuloplasty may be done to open a heart valve that has become stiff. But, not all conditions in which a heart valve becomes stiff, treatable with valvuloplasty. If the heart valves become damaged or diseased, they may not work properly. Conditions that may cause problems with the heart valves are valvular stenosis and valvular regurgitation (leaky valve).
Stiff valves may be caused by infection (such as rheumatic fever or staphylococcus infections), birth defects, and ageing.
Mitral valve disease may cause the following symptoms:
- Chest pain
- Trouble breathing
- Oedema (swelling) of the feet, ankles, or abdomen
- Rapid weight gain due to fluid retention
Mitral balloon valvuloplasty performed to open a stiff (stenotic) mitral heart valve. In this procedure, your doctor inserts a catheter with a balloon attached is inserted into a blood vessel in the groin and advances it through the aorta into the heart. The balloon is then advanced until it is directly in the opening of the narrowed valve (mitral valve). Once positioned properly, the balloon is inflated and deflated several times until the valve opening is adequately improved. The catheter and balloon are removed, a pressure is applied to stop bleeding, and the patient must rest flat for several hours.
Possible risks of valvuloplasty include:
- Bleeding at the catheter insertion site
- Blood clot or damage to the blood vessel at the insertion site
- Significant blood loss that may require the blood transfusion
- Infection at the catheter insertion site
- Abnormal heart rhythms
- Kidney failure
- New or worsening valve regurgitation (leakage)
- Rupture of the valve, requiring open-heart surgery
If you are pregnant, lactating, or breastfeeding, inform your doctor due to the risk of injury to the fetus from a valvuloplasty.
The cost of Mitral balloon valvuloplasty varies from 3500 to 4500$ USD. The cost of a Mitral balloon valvuloplasty depends on the type of facility that you approach for the procedure.
