Gamma Knife

Gamma Knife is a device used for radiosurgery treatment. It uses Gamma radiation to treat the tumour cells, especially in the brain. It is mostly used to treat the brain tumours by administering high-intensity gamma radiation therapy in a manner that concentrates the radiation only over a small volume.

The device was invented in 1967. It aims gamma radiation through a target point in the patient's brain. The patient has to wear a specialised helmet that gets surgically attached to the skull, to keep the brain tumor stationary at the aiming mark of gamma rays. An ablative dose of radiation is sent through the tumour in one treatment session and spares the surrounding brain tissues.

Gamma Knife therapy uses doses of the radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors, delivered precisely to avoid damaging healthy brain tissue. It is capable of accurately focusing many beams of gamma radiation on one or multiple tumors at the same time. Each beam is of comparatively low intensity, so the radiation has little effect on intervening brain tissue and is concentrated at the tumor only.

According to a medical report, Gamma Knife radiosurgery has proven to be useful for patients with malignant or benign brain tumors up to 4 cm (1.6 in) in size, vascular malformations such as an arteriovenous malformation, pain, and other functional problems. For the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, the procedure may be used repeatedly on patients.
